Watch: PM Lee addresses Singapore on COVID-19 situation

SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Monday (Dec 14) addressed the nation on the COVID-19 situation and the outlook for next year.

The address was broadcast live on CNA, its website, Facebook page, YouTube channel and on CNA938.

Key points from Mr Lee’s address included:

1. Singapore will enter Phase 3 of its COVID-19 reopening on Dec 28. Social gatherings of up to 8 people will be allowed, and capacity limits in public places like malls and attractions, and at places of worship will be eased.

2. Singapore has approved the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. The first shipment should arrive by the end of December, with other vaccines to arrive in the coming months.

3. COVID-19 vaccination will be voluntary, but all adults in Singapore are encouraged to be vaccinated.

4. Priority for the COVID-19 vaccine will be given to healthcare and frontline workers, the elderly and the vulnerable. The rest of the population will be progressively vaccinated by the end of next year.

5. COVID-19 vaccination will be free for all Singaporeans and long-term residents.

Following Mr Lee's address, the co-chairs of the ministerial task force on COVID-19 will hold a press conference.

Singapore has reported more than 58,000 COVID-19 cases, with 29 fatalities.

The country has recorded fewer than 20 new COVID-19 cases each day since Oct 1, and the majority of the infections are imported cases who were placed on stay-home notice or isolated upon arrival.
