Prepaid SIM cards issued from Nov 15 will no longer support 2G: Telcos

The change is to prepare for the closure of 2G networks in Singapore next April, say M1, Singtel and StarHub in a joint news release.

SINGAPORE: New prepaid SIM cards will no longer support 2G handsets from next Tuesday (Nov 15), M1, Singtel and StarHub said in a joint news release on Wednesday.

The Singapore telcos said the move was to ensure mobile users migrate in time for the closure of 2G networks across the island next April, and that customers would be kept informed at sales locations and through other channels.

They added that while all existing prepaid SIM cards will not be affected, "we urge customers to upgrade to 3G or 4G-capable handsets early".

"A wide range of 3G and 4G handsets are available at retailers across the island to enable customers to make the transition to 3G or 4G networks," the telcos said.
