SINGAPORE: Republic Polytechnic (RP) launched a new specialist diploma on Thursday (Nov 24) to meet the growing demand for social media professionals.

Called the Specialist Diploma in Communication Strategies for Social Media, the one-year Continuing Education and Training (CET) programme is the first such programme of its kind offered by a local polytechnic, said RP in a media release.

It begins in April 2017 and will take in 30 students for its first batch.

The specialist diploma will cover:

  • Communication strategies for social media;
  • Research and application of social and digital media analytics;
  • Content creation and marketing; and
  • Crisis communication

It aims to offer graduates knowledge and applications on how social media can be harnessed and maximised to achieve business goals. The programme focuses strongly on project work and will require students to apply concepts learned to develop social media communication strategies for industry-related projects.

RP said the programme is in line with the SkillFutures movement “to develop new competencies and embrace lifelong learning”. The diploma’s graduates will primed to take on roles and business functions in communication services, such as public affairs, media relations and brand advocacy, as well as client services like consultancy and account management.

DEMAND FOR A GROWING INDUSTRY

According to RP, citing the Economic Development Board, Singapore’s media industry grew 150 per cent in the last five year and is projected to maintain healthy growth for the next five years. The growth also resulted in a rise of demand for local talent in the sector, including those who can create content and harness digital media technologies.

RP said the new specialist diploma will equip communication professionals “with necessary skillsets for the rapidly-changing digital domain to engage audiences effectively”.

“Through our interaction with the industry, we have identified skill gaps that have impeded the efficient adoption of digital media within companies,” said Mr Warren Wang, director of RP’s School of Management and Communication. “The Specialist Diploma in Communication Strategies for Social Media will help communications professionals make sense of current and upcoming digital landscapes to connect effectively with their audiences.”
