SINGAPORE: The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) will be headed by Tan Kiat How, starting from Jan 1, 2017, the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI) said in a media statement on Friday (Dec 16).
Mr Tan was appointed chief executive officer, succeeding Gabriel Lim, who will continue to serve as Second Permanent Secretary (Communications and Information).
Mr Tan is currently Deputy Secretary (Cyber and Technology) at MCI. Prior to this, Mr Tan served at the former Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, the Ministry of Finance and the Pioneer Generation Office.
In his time at the then-IDA, Mr Tan helped develop the Intelligent Nation 2015 plan and implement the Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network.
At the Pioneer Generation Office, Mr Tan spearheaded community engagement efforts to Pioneer Generation members and their caregivers.
At MCI, he was involved in refining the national cybersecurity strategy with the Cyber Security Agency (CSA).
Mr Tan will build on ongoing efforts to strengthen the IMDA and partner industry stakeholders to grow the infocomm media sector, said MCI in its media statement.
IMDA's outgoing CEO, Mr Lim, was appointed to lead the former Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA) on Dec 8, 2014. Under his leadership, MDA updated the Media Market Conduct Code to strengthen protection for pay TV subscribers, and reviewed regulations for online video streaming services to give Singaporeans greater choice for online videos while protecting the young from inappropriate content, said MCI in its statement.
The ministry noted that MDA also developed a vibrant media sector by launching the IGNITE media development plan, as well as the Infocomm Media 2025 Masterplan.
Mr Lim was also instrumental in strengthening Singapore’s position as a media hub through three successful editions of the Singapore Media Festival since 2014, said MCI.
Mr Lim was appointed co-managing director of the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) in May 2016, in preparation for the formation of IMDA on Oct 1. IMDA is the lead agency bringing Singapore into a digital future where the convergence of infocomm and media will transform the way Singaporeans live, work and play.
As CEO of IMDA, Mr Lim oversaw the establishment of the TechSkills Accelerator to create better careers for Singaporeans, and preparations for Singapore’s fourth mobile network operator.
Mr Lim also oversaw the launch of PIXEL Studios, Singapore’s first dedicated facility for digital content creators, in November 2016.
