Committee of Supply 2021 debate, Day 5: Leong Mun Wai on shortage of housing

A shortage of BTO flats may become a serious problem, said NCMP Leong Mun Wai in Parliament on Thursday (Mar 4). He said that in February 2021, demand was 12 times the supply for rental flats under a scheme to temporarily house families as they await completion of their new flats. He asked if the COVID-19 crisis will impact the delivery of new flats over the next few years. To create greater rental flat supply, Mr Leong suggested that the Government delay demolishing old HDB flats slated for redevelopment, or seek to rent private units in non-prime residential areas at a reasonable price.
