Gerard Ee appointed Charity Council chairman

SINGAPORE — Mr Gerard Ee has been appointed Chairman of the Charity Council for a two-year term, starting from yesterday (March 1).
Mr Ee succeeds Mrs Fang Ai Lian, who will be retiring from the Council after more than eight years, said the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) in a statement today. Four new members also have been appointed and nine re-appointed to form a 14-member Council.
Mr Ee, who is currently the President of the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA) and Chairman of the ISCA Executive Committee, is widely known for his role as former chairman of the National Kidney Foundation, where he helped to strengthen the organisation’s governance standards and accountability.
He has also served many committees in the social sector, in areas including disabilities, rehabilitation of juvenile delinquents, fund-raising, education and health-related services. He was previously President of the National Council of Social Service, Chairman of the Public Transport Council, Council for Third Age and the Singapore Institute of Management.
Mr Ee is currently the Chairman of Changi General Hospital, Eastern Health Alliance and SIM University (UniSIM) Board of Trustees.
Commending Mrs Fang, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong said: “Mrs Fang has made a difference to the charity sector through her efforts to promote good governance and capability building. I thank her for her leadership, dedicated service and invaluable contributions to the Council and the sector all these years.”
Some of the key milestones achieved by the Charity Council during Mrs Fang’s term in office include the introduction of the Code of Governance in 2007, the refined Code in 2011, the launch of the Charity Governance Awards in 2012 and the development of a Charity Transparency Framework to help charities improve their disclosure practices. This framework will also be used to recognise exemplary charities through the new Charity Transparency Awards, which will be introduced next year.
Four other key members who will be retiring from the Council, apart from Mrs Fang:
