Power fault disrupts train service along North-East Line during morning rush hour

SINGAPORE: Train services on the North-East Line between Buangkok and Punggol MRT stations were disrupted for about six hours on Thursday morning (Feb 27) after a broken contact wire disrupted power supply to the trains.

SBS Transit's first tweet on the issue at 5.50am said that the disruption was due to a power fault.

Commuters shared photos of crowded train platforms at the affected stations on social media.

At about 10.30am, SBS Transit said in a tweet that train service would not be available between Hougang and Punggol stations to facilitate repair works.

Repair works were completed by about 11.50am and normal service resumed at about 12.15pm after safety checks, SBS Transit said in response to queries from CNA.

The cause of the power discruption was a "broken contact wire of the Overhead Catenary System at the train launching track of Sengkang depot", SBS Transit's senior vice-president for corporate communications Tammy Tan told CNA.

The Overhead Catenary System supplies power to the trains.

"We apologise to affected commuters for  the inconvenience caused," said Ms Tan.

Ms Tan said that a shuttle train service was put into operation at 5.36am on one platform between Punggol and Buangkok stations.

Free regular and bridging bus services were also available at designated bus stops along the affected stations to maintain connectivity, she added.

"Repair works to the OCS were carried out after the morning peak hours," said Ms Tan. 

"To facilitate this, power supply to the tracks was shut off between NE14 Hougang and NE17 Punggol stations," she added.

While repair works were made, regular train services operated between HarbourFront and Serangoon stations at a frequency of about 9 minutes, while shuttle trains ran between Serangoon and Hougang stations, she said.

Investigations are ongoing by both SBS Transit and the Land Transport Authority.
