Public to be consulted before public transport fares adjustment review

Minister of State for Transport Josephine Teo on Monday reassured parliament that a public consultation exercise on the adjustment of public transport fares will be made before the review committee decides on any change.

SINGAPORE: Minister of State for Transport Josephine Teo on Monday reassured parliament that a public consultation exercise on the adjustment of public transport fares will be made before the review committee decides on any change.

A new fare formula will be ready in 2013 after fare adjustments were suspended this year.

Mrs Teo said the outcome of the review should be a framework that continues to achieve a good balance between keeping public transport fares affordable and keeping public transport operations sustainable.

It should also incentivise operators to improve their productivity and be efficient in their operations.

She added the committee will study the possible options and propose improvements for the framework of the fare review exercise.

Mrs Teo also explained to the House that reviews are carried out to ascertain the adequacy of public bus services.

The Land Transport Authority and public transport operators have a joint-quarterly review process to reduce crowding on heavily utilised bus services.
