SINGAPORE: In addition to self-collection in Johor Bahru or receiving a tag by post, Singapore motorists will soon have a third option for collecting their vehicle entry permit (VEP) tag, which is needed by all foreign-registered vehicles entering Malaysia from Singapore from October.

From Sep 12, Singapore drivers can collect their tags from the VEP information counter in Woodlands. The service will cost S$39, said TCSens on Tuesday (Sep 3). This is on top of the RM10 (S$2.98) charged for the tag itself.

TCSens is the vendor appointed by Malaysia's Road Transport Department (JPJ) to handle queries from Singapore drivers.

CNA has also seen an appointment confirmation email from TCSens dated Sep 3, confirming a time slot to collect the tag at the VEP Collection Centre in Woodlands on Sep 18.

A source familiar with the move previously told CNA that the earliest date to collect the VEP tag at Woodlands was Sep 18. But TCSens later said that the earliest collection date was Sep 12.

The VEP information counter in Singapore is located on the third floor of 186 Woodlands Industrial Park E5.

CNA also understands that drivers who choose to collect the RFID tag from Woodlands will, by default, be offered the tag that is installed on the windscreen unless their windscreen is assessed to not be suitable. In that case, they will receive the RFID tag that is meant to be installed on the headlamp.

This is similar to the procedure that has been reported at the VEP collection centre at Danga Bay in Johor Bahru.

In contrast, it appears that drivers who opt to have their RFID tag delivered in Singapore will generally receive the version designed for installation on the headlamp.

From Oct 1, motorists who enter Malaysia without a VEP tag face a fine of up to RM2,000 (US$425) or a jail term of up to six months.

Editor's note: This article has been amended after TCSens clarified that VEP tag collection at Woodlands starts on Sep 12, and not Sep 18.
