Despite being called “ugly and short” Mdm Tan met her significant other while studying art at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. They have been together for 36 years.

Her favourite subject to paint is the panda – a tribute to her late mother. “The way panda mothers care for their cubs reminds me of how my mother cared for me."
