Desmond Tan on tighter weapons controls on mixed-use items

In the past three years, 131 people under age 18 have been arrested for possession of offensive weapons, said Minister of State for Home Affairs Desmond Tan in reply to an MP's questions in Parliament on Tuesday (Aug 3). He said with the new Guns, Explosives and Weapons Control Act coming into force at the end of the year, the list of regulated weapons will be expanded. The Government has to find an appropriate balance as almost any item can be used as a weapon. For mixed-use items like axes, there may be a need to impose some controls but this must be done carefully to avoid overregulating.
