Hazel Poa on racial harmony and constitutional amendment bills
The Maintenance of Racial Harmony Bill needs to strike “a very fine balance” between preserving public order, peace and racial harmony and ensuring freedom of speech and expression, said NCMP Hazel Poa in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 4). She asked for greater clarity on the type of behaviour or expressions that will be prohibited under the Bill and examples of scenarios where no existing legislation could be used to preserve peace and order and a restraining order would be required.
