Heng Swee Keat on commemorating 200 years of the Singapore Police Force

The friendly policemen out to make friends with the public under the Neighbourhood Police Post (NPP) used to be derided by some as "no power police", said Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat. Today, it is a policing strategy that enables the police to rally 99 per cent of law-abiding Singaporeans against one per cent of potential criminals, he said in Parliament on Tuesday (Aug 3). Mr Heng said Singapore made the right choices in adopting the "soft policing" approach of building the community to partner one another, complemented by cutting-edge capabilities to deal with extreme stresses.
