Hoon Hian Teck on support measures for Phases 2 and 3 (Heightened Alert)

Amid COVID-19, Singapore can take heart from historical parallels showing that it could survive, and thrive, after a crisis. Making the point in Parliament on Tuesday (Jul 27), NMP Hoon Hian Teck pointed specifically to the withdrawal of British forces from Singapore shortly after independence. He outlined three main thrusts to address short- and long-term needs of the economy - providing immediate fiscal resources to keep businesses afloat and save jobs; identifying new sources of driving rapid growth; and recognising other fundamental spending needs and finding tax revenues to pay for them.
