Ong Hua Han on Child Development Co-Savings (Amendment) Bill

08:47 Min

The proposed amendments under the Bill send a “resounding” message that parental responsibility is a joint effort and not just a mother’s duty, said NMP Ong Hua Han. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Sep 18), he commended the Government for responding and acting on the changing needs of society. He urged the Government to do more to support the parenting load for children with disabilities more extensively. He pointed out that children with disabilities often require more specialised care and incur higher expenses than their peers. Their parents face additional financial, physical and emotional challenges, he added. He said it is heartening to see an inclusive range of services that cater to most needs. He asked if the Government could consider more financial support to ensure that all children have an equal start to life, and revise the income threshold of its schemes and factor in the actual costs borne by families.
