Sylvia Lim on Civil Defence Shelter and Fire Safety (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill

08:09 Min

Premises which the public frequents daily, such as coffee shops and food centres, may not be required to obtain the licences and permits covered by the Civil Defence Shelter and Fire Safety (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill as they are considered lower risks. Many of them have flammable materials, such as gas used for cooking. MP Sylvia Lim raised this concern in parliament on Tuesday (Sep 8), saying lapses in fire safety could inflict devastating harm. She also noted the proposed change to extend the maximum validity period of licences and permits issued under the Fire Safety Act from three years to five years. She wanted to know if there are any potential safety compromises being made, saying workplace conditions can drastically change over three years, let alone five years. She wanted to know what concurrent requirements will mitigate the potential fire safety risks from the extension of the validity period.
