Since 2018, bootleg alcohol has taken the lives of at least 33 consumers in Malaysia. Bottles passed off as popular brands can be bought cheaply at provision shops in Penang for instance, but instead of the real thing they contain improperly distilled alcohol with deadly traces of methanol. In Penang, local authorities continue to crack down, but enforcement is an uphill challenge.
