Tan See Leng on safeguarding local workers as Singapore seeks to attract more top global talent
Even as Singapore moves to boost its position as a global hub for talent, it maintains a three-pronged strategy to support good employment outcomes for Singaporeans, said Manpower Minister Tan See Leng in Parliament on Monday (Oct 3). He explained why Singapore must let companies have access to foreign manpower while ensuring the complementarity of this workforce, and how this has led to better job opportunities and higher wages overall for local workers. He also spoke about developing the local talent pipeline and efforts to bring back top overseas Singaporean talent. Finally, he reiterated Singapore’s fair consideration stance on hiring and said enforcement action was taken against approximately 300 companies for discriminatory workplace practices between 2017 and 2021. Dr Tan was responding to MPs’ questions.
