Christopher de Souza on Constitution and Penal Code Amendment Bills relating to Section 377A

Unity has been a powerful force in Singapore's history and must remain a part of its future, said MP Christopher de Souza. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Nov 28), he stressed the need for unity as there is a potential for Singapore to be torn apart by discord. He hopes that Singaporeans can discuss their views peacefully and respectfully. He said Parliament, being made up of elected Members, has the requisite mandate to deal with these issues with dexterity. No other institution can carry through such a legislative manoeuvre, he said. He hopes that the choice of deploying Parliament is the best path for unity for Singapore. He also hopes that the decorum, tone and respect displayed during the debates on the Constitution and Penal Code Amendment Bills relating to Section 377A will set a good example for all Singaporeans of how to deal with such difficult and sensitive issues in future.
