Gerald Giam on racial harmony and constitutional amendment bills

06:56 Min

Enduring racial harmony requires genuine understanding and open dialogue among all communities, but the broad Government powers proposed under the Maintenance of Racial Harmony Bill risk deterring legitimate public discourse that is meant to raise awareness or advocate for positive change, said MP Gerald Giam. He called for more clarity on the type of speech that would fall under the scope of the law. He also expressed concern that legislation of this significance, on an issue as fundamental as race relations, did not undergo the scrutiny of a Parliamentary select committee. Mr Giam spoke in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 4).
