These islands boast exclusive superb views and gorgeous beaches. They are also a treasury of delicious seafood and a paradise for several interesting wild creatures. Our first destination is Kujuku Islands in Nagasaki. They comprise 208 islands, out of which 204 are uninhabited. Start your trip from Huis Ten Bosch and take a 30-minute helicopter ride to view Kujuku Islands from the sky. The Kujuku Islands are located 25km north of Sasebo Port. Kujuku Islands can be reached by train and bus from Huis Ten Bosch. First, travel by JR Omura Line to Sasebo Station and then take a bus to Saikai Pearl Sea Resort. Kujuku Islands are a part of Saikai National Park, which attracts 700,000 visitors annually. Visitors can join a boat tour to the islands and visit an aquarium at the park. Join us this week as we hike along the “Kanto Togetherness Trail”, a route which connects the mountains around Tokyo. It is the result of a joint collaboration between six Kanto prefectures and Tokyo. The nature trail spans 1,789km but we will hike along a 60km-route from Mt. Takao in Tokyo to Mt. Mitake, over five days.

More unique winter festivals await us this week. In Yamagata, we first go to Yonezawa’s yukidoro (snow lantern) festival. A shuttle bus takes you from Yonezawa Station to the festival grounds at Uesugi Shrine. The yukidoro and yukibombori (snow table lamps) are handmade. Go to a “candle experience” corner, where you can learn to make your own candle for 100 yen.

Join us as we check out traditional winter festivals in Japan. We will first head to Itoigawa in Niigata to witness the 300-year-old Hadaka Doage (Naked Body Throw) festival. Travel by Joetsu Shinkansen and Hakutaka Express from Tokyo to Itoigawa. Then, take the Hokuriku Main Line to No Station. During your journey, you can admire the magnificent view of the Sea of Japan.
