We resume our winter road trip from Nagano to Kanazawa, along the route of the Hokuriku Shinkansen. The next stop in our journey is Zuiryuji Temple. Zuiryuji, which was established 400 years ago, is the family temple of Kaga Domain's second feudal lord, Maeda Toshinaga.
The Buddhist temple has been designated as a National Treasure. It enshrines Shakyamuni, Manjusri and Samantabhadra. This temple is made of Japanese zelkova. In contrast with the opulent decorations that the Tokugawa clan used on Nikko Toshogu, the Maeda clan elegantly used perfectly-constructed beams and pillars to express its beauty. The biggest characteristic of Zuiryuji is the 300m-long cloister surrounding the Buddhist temple. The temple's kitchen is only used on special occasions. It was restored during the large-scale renovations carried out during the Showa and Heisei eras. Inside, you will see traditional utensils such as a huge pot which can cook 60kg of rice. A method called Yudaki is used to make the rice - hot water is first boiled in the pot, after which rice is added and cooked. Do also check out the temple’s lecture hall. Maeda Toshinaga's remains have been placed here
