This week, we will travel on the Izukyu Line from Atami in Shizuoka Prefecture to the port town of Shimoda. During the two-day trip around Izu Peninsula, we will check out scenic spots to view spring flowers and soak in relaxing hot springs.
Atami is famous for its hot springs and various types of plum trees and blossoms such as Yabai-kei, Toji and weeping plum blossoms. A plum blossom festival is usually held at Atami Park until early March. After travelling by train from Atami, alight at Ito Station. Ito has several hot springs and many of them welcome drop-in visitors. One such place is the famous free-flowing open-air bath called Yokikan. This mixed bath, which was founded in 1901, costs 1,000 yen (US$12) per person. Interestingly, you’ll have to take a tram from the hotel to reach the bath, which is located on a hill. It takes less than a minute to reach the huge open-air bath. The water comes directly from the source and from the bath, you can admire a gorgeous view of the entire town and even Hatsushima in the distance. This week, we will visit scenic spots in Yamagata during winter. First, travel from Tokyo by bullet train and local trains to Yamagata. Then, take a boat trip around Mogami River and enjoy the beautiful winter scenery of the icicles and mountains as the boat slowly makes its way down the river.

This week, we embark on a two-day trip to Kita-Shinsyu in winter. We start by taking a bus from Nagano to Togakushi, also known as a “ninja town”. In the past, it used to be a training place for mountain ascetics. The first place we will visit is Togakushi Shrine. It has a history of over 2,000 years and attracted many monks in the past.
