Join us as we take a tour around Shinshu (Nagano) this week. We will try autumn specialities such as chestnuts and matsutake mushrooms and check out the famous hot spring town of Shibu. The budget for this two-day trip is 40,000 yen (S$ 493), including transportation.
Fist, board the Odakyu Deluxe Coach “Yukemuri” at Nagano Station. Nagano Line bought this train from Odakyu in 2006. Other trains bought by Nagano Line include the “Narita Express”. The scenic train ride to Obuse takes 25 minutes. Obuse has been known as the “town of chestnuts” since the Edo period. Chestnut sweets were loved by Hokusai Katsushika and his art works are displayed in one of the shops in the town. There is even a chestnut-shaped stone monument near the station. The town’s famous chestnuts are huge and there is a story behind this. In the past, the “acid water” of Matsu River used to flow from the mountains. When the river used to get flooded, the water would get absorbed into the soil. As a result of this “acid soil” at chestnut orchards, the chestnuts grew to be huge and sweet. Hot springs and delicious food await us as we embark on a four-day driving trip around Izu Peninsula. We will travel 260km from Higashi Izu in East Izu to Osezaki, Nishi Izu in West Izu. Begin the trip at Atami and drive along the Jyogasaki Coast towards Ito. You will arrive at Ito Station after 40 minutes. Ito is a popular hot spring town located in the east of Izu peninsula.
