The much-awaited public apology from the SMRT’s group chief executive officer (CEO) finally happened. Better late than never.

The flooding incident at the MRT tunnel was perhaps the straw that broke the camel’s back.

It takes courage to admit mistakes and acknowledge shortfalls within the organisation that one is heading. I firmly believe that such an act is the first sincere step towards effective corrective actions.

The long laundry list of corrective measures undertaken since 2012 is commendable and must be a result of exhaustive examination.

However, we all know that careful implementation and follow-ups are critical for these measures to be successful. Otherwise, they remain as grand plans on the drawing board.

Public criticism of SMRT is not ill-intended. We do not wish to see the national rail operator constantly fall short of performance expectations.

Let’s hope this apology is the true first step that the operator is taking to improve the maintenance regime.
