Dual-SIM phones with 2G slot still useful

We refer to Mr Tiong Choon Hin’s letter “Stop the sale of dual-SIM phones that support 2G” (April 28).

The sale of dual-SIM phones, in which one of the card slots can support the 2G network, provides consumers with a greater choice of handsets that would best suit their needs.

For example, dual-SIM phones can be useful for end users who wish to use a 2G card when overseas.

Hence the Infocomm Media Development Authority has allowed dual-SIM phones to be sold and used locally so long as one of the card slots can support the 3G or 4G network, even though 2G networks have ceased operations in Singapore.

Consumers who wish to buy dual-SIM phones could approach their respective service providers to better understand the features of such phones before deciding on a purchase.
