Inspect public toilets for cleanliness, availability of soap

At some coffee shops and shopping centres, soap is not supplied in the toilets, the writer says.

With Singapore responding to an outbreak of Covid-19, we have been reminded to practise good hygiene — including washing our hands with soap — to prevent the coronavirus from spreading.

But soap is unavailable in some public toilets.

For instance, when I dropped a coin at an Yishun coffee shop two weeks ago and wanted to wash it, I could not find soap in the toilet.

This is not just about maintaining hygiene among coffee shop patrons. If soap is not provided, how do stallholders who prepare food maintain good hygiene?

Apart from coffee shop toilets, those in hawker centres, bus interchanges and wet markets are often dirty.

At some toilets in shopping malls, soap is also not supplied. At washrooms where there is soap, it is watery at times and I wonder if it is diluted. Soap and toilet paper are must-haves in malls.

I agree with Voices contributor Tan Kok Tim (“Remove main doors of public toilets for better hygiene”; Feb 2) that all public toilets should not come with main doors. This eliminates the need to turn a knob to enter or leave the washroom, thus preventing the spread of the virus.

It is time for the Ministry of Health or the National Environment Agency to thoroughly inspect our public toilets before the virus outbreak worsens because of unhygienic facilities.
