Resuming library services: Phased approach taken for safety of users and staff, says NLB
Responding to a TODAY reader who urged the reopening of seating areas in public libraries, the National Library Board explains why it is taking a phased approach for now.
We thank Mr Varun Naidu for his feedback (“Reopen seating areas in public libraries with safeguards against Covid-19”; Sept 7).
The National Library Board is taking a phased approach to the resumption of our library services, to ensure the continued safety of our patrons and staff members.
In line with the Covid-19 multi-ministry task force’s advisory, all programmes, guided tours and events in our physical spaces remain temporarily suspended.
Seating and study areas in our premises, including newspaper and multimedia stations, also remain closed to reduce social interaction and minimise community transmission of Covid-19.
In the meantime, we have gradually resumed some services to ensure that our patrons continue to have access to them.
We have put in place the necessary safeguards, including safe distancing and capacity control measures, such as an online booking system for library visits, the “borrow and go” model and capacity limits.
We thank our patrons for their understanding, cooperation and patience as we prepare for the full resumption of library services aligned with the task force’s guidance.
This is to ensure that our libraries and archives remain safe for everyone.
