A growing number of foreign tourists are visiting locations in Japan that are featured in anime. A Japan tourism agency survey showed that the percentage of foreign visitors, who visited places associated with movies and anime, increased from 4.6 percent in 2019 to 7.5 percent in 2023. Andrea Heng and Hairianto Diman spoke with Associate Professor Deborah Shamoon, Japanese Studies Department, NUS, to examine the appeal and popularity of anime and its impact on Japan’s tourism.
