CNA938 Rewind - What’s Happening at NGS? From a Film Fest to the Singapore Stories Exhibition

Destination Anywhere’s Melanie Oliveiro finds out where Singaporeans can go to see some movie offerings at the sixth edition of the Painting with Light film festival. Held at the National Gallery Singapore from 4 to 14 September 2025, the festival spotlights 45 films exploring art, culture, and works that address the urgent social issues. NGS’ senior curator Dr Adele Tan will highlight some of the films and festival activities. Dr Tan will also talk about an NGS exhibition she curated: “Singapore Stories: Pathways and Detours in Art”, an SG60 signature programme dedicated to Singapore’s art history featuring revered artists like Chua Mia Tee and Georgette Chen.

CNA938 Rewind - Art With Heart - ‘Postcard Stories’ by Yip Yew Chong at One Fullerton

In ‘Destination Anywhere’ Melanie Oliveiro speaks with celebrated artist Yip Yew Chong to find out where to see his latest slate of public artworks. Titled ‘Postcard Stories’, the installation features 32 metres of hand-painted murals that resemble an ‘old postcards’ theme depicting The Fullerton Heritage precinct - located at One Fullerton’s Seaview Channel walkway. Yip will talk about the research he did and the memories in his mind’s eye that made way for the murals, his experiences hand painting the artworks along the walkway and how the murals are interspersed with three-dimensional pop-up props for perfect photo opportunities.

In ‘Culture Club’ Melanie Oliveiro finds out more about Mediacorp's latest Tamil drama 'Sandamarutham' described as a sweeping tale of resistance, renewal and resilience and set against the backdrop of colonial-era Singapore. Director A. Mohamed Ali and actor Surya Prakash will discuss how Sandamarutham interweaves historical events and personalities, including Narayana Pillai and Sir Stamford Raffles. They’ll also talk about the research conducted into various roles like Thennarasu (Surrya Prakash) a weaver’s son and one of the right-hand men of Narayana Pillai, the social entrepreneur and businessman.
