ByteDance’s TikTok faces a deadline of Jan 19 to find a US buyer in order to continue operating in the country, and the Supreme Court has signalled it is unlikely to oppose the law imposing that condition. Bloomberg News earlier reported that Chinese officials were considering selling the company’s US operations to Mr Elon Musk’s social media platform X. But TikTok labelled the report as “pure fiction”. Will TikTok survive the ban? We find out.

South Korean authorities arrested impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol on Wednesday (Jan 15) over insurrection accusations related to his martial law declaration. They now have 48 hours to question Mr Yoon, after which they must seek a warrant to detain him for up to 20 days or release him. In a historic agreement, Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire deal after 15 months of war in Gaza. The first phase of the agreement takes effect from Sunday and includes the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages held by Hamas.
