Johor regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim’s call for Johor to be treated as an equal partner may not have a basis in Malaysia’s current laws but shows its seriousness in gaining legal and financial autonomy. Asia First asks if the stars have aligned for Johor to see this through with the state’s leader as the country’s current Sultan, and if there’s any chance for an amendment to the constitution to allow this.
