The Szechuan Mala flavour is a massively popular base for hotpots in restaurants all across our island. The fiery burst of peppercorns is a rambunctious taste profile that makes one sweat, and yet, it brings everyone together, hungry for more. Maybe it’s because the tingle lends an appetising note to our food, yet helps to bring out the savoury in equal measure. Or maybe it’s that numbing and robust quality that keeps our meals hearty, and our bellies craving more.

KFC is the latest to bring this addictive character to the table with its fiery Mala Fried Chicken.

While the Mala recipe varies, featuring Szechuan pepper, chillies and assorted spices, the one thing a true Mala aficionado needs is that deep, numbing buzz. Keeping that distinction in mind, KFC has gone through multiple trials to achieve that epicurean golden ratio of the above.

Breaded, then fried to a satisfying crunch, the tender chicken is treated to KFC’s own concoction of the famous sauce. The delicious essence of Mala infuses the skin and the result is a taste explosion that hits all the right notes.

Bite through the crispy red skin, dotted with bits of herb and ground peppercorn, and it’ll give way to the juicy meat. The aromatic Mala fragrance comes through quickly, and the Szechuan pepper start their work. Every mouthful is a savoury one, with a hint of sweetness and pleasant smokiness that comes from the unique blend of spices. The fire from the chilli rolls in gently, and lingers softly afterwards, leaving that comfortable numbing buzz that the Szechuan Mala flavour is renowned for.

For S$8.95, the KFC 2-piece Mala Chicken Meal comes with two pieces of the Mala Chicken, one regular Whipped Potato, one regular Coleslaw, and one regular cup of SJORA Mango Peach beverage.

You can also try the Mala Box Meal (S$10.95), which adds on two pieces of Hot & Crispy Tenders. Other heartier selections include the Mala 5-piece Meal (S$19.55) and the Mala 9-piece Feast (S$39.95) – perfect for sharing with your friends or family who love their food spicy.

After the Mala treatment, an enjoyable way to quell the heat is with KFC’s limited Kyoho Grape Froyo. The 98-per-cent fat-free frozen yogurt is made from Australian milk and contains probiotics to keep the tummy engines in good shape after the Mala workout.

The KFC Mala Chicken looks set to keep Mala and spice fans happy, and ensure KFC’s promise in keeping its chicken “finger lickin’ good”!
