Like all ethnic groups, Chinese traditions are rife with meaning, and when it comes to the Chinese New Year period, gatherings at the table bear so much more significance than just a meal. Whether it’s a social call with friends or business associates, or a long-awaited family reunion, eating together is made all the more memorable when the dishes are rich in flavour and meaning.

Creating a menu abundant with both, PUTIEN ushers in the Year of the Rat with its Chinese New Year offerings, conceived to welcome auspicious tidings for all diners.

Other than seeing its must-have classics on the table, like the rich stir-fried yam and sweet and sour pork with lychees, you’ll find plenty of symbolic dishes in the festive spread that bear all the blessings of abundance within them.

The translated word for “fish” in Mandarin closely resembles the word “surplus” – so the arrival of the glistening Oiled Yellow Croaker will surely light up the mood of your guests and spell good things to come.

The Prosperity Prawn is the perfect follow-up, because in Cantonese, the word for “prawn” repeated is said to sound like someone laughing heartily away, signalling joy and good company.

Don’t forget to order PUTIEN’s Longevity Noodles, which symbolises a long and blissful life. It may not make for the easiest eating, but have a go at trying not to cut through the noodles with your utensils or your teeth, as it’s believed to extend an extra few healthy years to your life!

Expect all of this to be served in style when you dine at PUTIEN. Each of the 13 outlets boasts a distinctive elegant setting to host your valued guests. For the fourth consecutive year, PUTIEN has achieved a Michelin star rating through a combination of exquisite Chinese fare, luxurious dining settings, and warm, inviting hospitality.

A TWIST ON TRADITIONS

Just like Christmas and its traditional specials like turkey and eggnog, what is Chinese New Year without some delicious Yu Sheng? PUTIEN’s version of this salad of raw fish and vegetables is a visual feast when presented – it comes alive with a mix of colours and textures, with every ingredient symbolising a form of blessing. There’s also nothing quite like the cherished rite of tossing the ingredients high in the air with chopsticks – the messier, the better – in a playful tradition that sparks instant kinship at the table.

Another traditionally festive item that you can look forward to at PUTIEN is its Pot of Goodies. The restaurant fills this dish with four layers of premium fare, overflowing with goodness and all the prosperity needed for the year ahead.

At the very top of the Pot of Goodies is a layer of textured black moss and dried scallops. Uncover that and the next level sees plump abalones cooked in rich broth. For the third layer, a mix of sea cucumbers, fish maw, tiger prawns, Japanese flower mushrooms, chicken wings, roast pork and PUTIEN’s own dried clams makes for a tasty treat. Lastly, a base of PUTIEN bean curd and white cabbage finishes off the blessings.

BRING THE BLESSINGS HOME

PUTIEN has also made these two popular items available for takeaway. Available in serving sizes for six or 10 people, every set of Prosperity Yu Sheng and Pot of Goodies also entitles you to a special 10 per cent discount. OCBC card members can look forward to an extra treat when they order takeaway for the Pot of Goodies. Their order will include the Prosperity Yu Sheng, as well as a box of handmade Mee Sua noodles from PUTIEN.

For those in a last-minute pickle for their dinners, the restaurant will be making the Prosperity Yu Sheng and the Pot of Goodies available on various food delivery platforms.

FESTIVE LEGENDS COME ALIVE

What’s food without the fanfare? PUTIEN drums up the atmosphere this Chinese New Year with plenty of festive activities to accompany the season. Everyone’s favourite God of Fortune will appear at selected outlets and timings from Jan 17 to Jan 29. To top it all off, a spectacular Lion Dance performance will also be held on Jan 31, across all outlets island-wide at different timings.

If you’re feeling lucky, give PUTIEN’s Spin and Win a try. Every successful reservation made from Jan 1 onwards will guarantee guests a spin, and let them win one of many prizes, which include premium ingredient gift boxes, PUTIEN’s signature Spice Mum Chili Sauce as well as redemptions for dishes.

This coming festive season, impress a business partner or show your love for your family with a PUTIEN meal – one that’s as delicious as it is memorable. Make your appointment by calling any of the 13 outlets and reserve your seats. For more details, visit putien.com.
