Connaught Drive trees let visitors relax and reflect
I was pleased to read the report “Connaught Drive part of a new civic district tree trail” (March 28). Such green space can have a therapeutic effect on people, many of whom feel the pressure in a bustling city.
In Connaught Drive, hidden from the noise and stresses of the city, individuals can experience a tranquil break from their heavy workload and fast-paced lifestyle. Amid its serene environment, visitors can also ponder on the heritage trees there and the lessons they have to offer.
For instance, the sturdy trees teach us about resilience. Until now, they have stood strong as a great many events, both good and bad, happened in Singapore. Likewise, as a nation, we must stand strong and overcome adversity.
Those trees also teach us about the importance of our heritage. As the nation progresses, we often see signs of our heritage disappearing; for example, to make way for the construction of buildings, whether for housing or economic purposes.
That these trees, symbols of Singapore’s rich history, are still surviving is a lesson that, as much as we need progress, we should not forget our roots, which have shaped us into the nation we are today.
I support the Heritage Tree Scheme and would encourage people to visit Connaught Drive.
