Does FairPrice need to open during CNY?

The report “NTUC FairPrice to extend opening hours for late-night, last-minute CNY shopping” (Jan 17, online) noted that 25 outlets “will stay open throughout the festive period”. Last year, I was appalled when FairPrice opened during Chinese New Year.

FairPrice is not only a supermarket chain but a social enterprise and a market leader in the industry — a trendsetter. It has set a bad precedent, opening the way for other chains to follow suit.

Already, its staff work on Sundays and public holidays when their children are at home. They could at least be home for Chinese New Year. Even Chinese Malaysians working in Singapore can take a week-long holiday for the celebrations.

Singaporeans have been taught from primary school to plan their schedules. And almost all Chinese Singaporeans would surely stock up on groceries before Chinese New Year.

There is a need to ensure that the celebrations are meant not only for the middle class and above but for all.

On the one hand, the Government takes pro-family measures. On the other hand, family reunions are curtailed even during auspicious periods. I urge FairPrice’s management to reconsider this arrangement.

Singaporeans have smaller shops and minimarts should they need to buy any last-minute titbits during this festive holiday.
