Don’t make consumers pay more for refusing plastics

The writer says she pays almost S$1 more for refusing plastic bags when buying Farmhouse milk at NTUC FairPrice stores.

At a time when we need to be more environmentally conscious, I am aghast at being penalised for saying no to plastics.

I buy Farmhouse milk from NTUC FairPrice stores every week.

If I purchase six 1L cartons and use my own bags, I pay S$17.25.

Yet if I buy the same in prepacked form — which comes in two plastic carriers, each containing three 1L cartons — I pay only S$16.30.

In effect, I am forking out 95 cents for refusing plastic bags.

I can understand that stores may lower prices for bulk buyers. But these discounts should be given, whether the milk cartons are stored in a customer's own bags or prepacked.

Customers should not be penalised for being more environmentally friendly.
