In “No proof MSG in moderation is bad for health” (Nov 9), the writer claimed that “research has not proved that monosodium glutamate (MSG) is more harmful than regular table salt”. Yet, there has been evidence to the contrary.

In 1969, a condition called the Chinese Restaurant Syndrome entered the medical literature; the side effects of MSG that people experienced included numbness and heart palpitations.

Neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock has explained that MSG is an excitotoxin: It over-excites the cells and can cause damage that may eventually lead to Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s or other diseases.

The writing is on the wall and one should heed warnings from doctors. Heng Cho Choon
