NEA should work closely with public to enforce smoking ban

Today is World No Tobacco Day, an appropriate time to reflect on the Government’s efforts to curb smoking in Singapore. In particular, I write about the need for stronger enforcement measures regarding the ban on smoking in public areas.

I find from experience that many smokers are law-abiding but may be unaware of the specific non-smoking zones, and that they would put out their cigarette if I convince them that it is indeed a non-smoking area.

But problems arise in areas that do not have the “No Smoking” sign. To prevent misunderstanding and confrontations, signs indicating the smoke-free zones should be erected clearly. This is particularly essential with the upcoming ban on smoking in public parks.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) should also uphold higher standards of accountability when members of the public report cases of the smoking ban being flouted. A recent experience left much to be desired.

When I called the hotline about smokers flouting the rule daily at my void deck, I was informed that the NEA would be unable to tell me if any action had been taken against the smokers.

I still witness the ban being disregarded almost every time I pass the area, and I wonder whether any action has been taken at all. The NEA is distancing itself from the public by taking this stance.

Other organisations such as the police would oblige and return calls to update the person on the general status of his or her report. I urge the NEA to work more closely with the public to achieve the long-term goal of reducing smoking.
