Not too troubled by findings on social class divide

Regarding the report, “Survey points to social class divide among Singaporeans” (Dec 28), I would like to say that what the survey revealed, which is that people are mixing more with those in the same social class, should not cause too much worry or concern.
There is a tendency for people to socialise with those they are comfortable with, which is why we have the saying, “Birds of a feather flock together”.
It does not mean that we are a divided people. I believe we are still very much a cohesive society.
The education system here has been improving over the years to not emphasise differences among students from various backgrounds. Some schools have even named their classes as “Harmony” or “Kindness” instead of A, B or C, which tended to denote ranking and superiority.
There is also more awareness created to highlight the lives of foreign workers, for example, and people are showing them more respect.
It would help that we not judge people based on their stations in life or how wealthy they are, but on the values they hold. Socialise with those who share your hobbies or interests, too. If all of us have this attitude, there will not be a social class divide in Singapore.
