Offer free taxi and private-hire car rides to workers on frontlines of Covid-19 fight

The writer says free government-funded rides for frontline workers will be a win-win, since it will also help Singapore's taxi and private-hire car drivers.

I would like to suggest that Singapore’s taxi operators and ride-hailing firms, such as Grab and Gojek, offer free rides to our healthcare workers as well as others on the frontlines of the fight against Covid-19, such as hospital receptionists and polyclinic employees.

These people are working round-the-clock and risking their lives for Singaporeans.

The taxi and ride-hailing companies should work closely with related government ministries, which should finance this project.

American ride-hailing firm Uber is offering this free service in the United Kingdom as a mark of appreciation for healthcare workers.

Staff members from the UK’s National Health Service can claim 200,000 free rides worth up to £15 (S$26) each and 100,000 free £10 meals via its food delivery service Uber Eats.

If this is done in Singapore, it will be a win-win because apart from showing appreciation to our frontline workers, it will help our taxi and private-hire car drivers financially.
