Regular checks and maintenance key to window safety
We thank the writer for his feedback in “Tackle falling windows by conducting visual checks” (Dec 16).
The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and the Housing and Development Board (HDB) take a serious view of window safety. One fallen window is one too many.
The BCA conducts audits at private apartments and HDB flats to ensure that home owners have replaced aluminium rivets with stainless steel ones for casement windows.
As part of the inspection, home owners are advised to repair their windows or install additional safety features. However, as all windows are subject to wear and tear through daily use, owners are required to actively ensure safety.
Windows may become defective and fall if owners do not check and maintain them regularly — at least twice a year.
We continue, therefore, to emphasise to home owners, through reminders every June 6 and Dec 12, to check, clean and repair their windows. It should not be a one-time effort.
If they are unsure about doing this on their own or wish to carry out window-related work, they can engage an approved window contractor to do the inspection.
A list of BCA-approved contractors, window maintenance tips and indicative rates for window-related work can be found at http://www.bca.gov.sg/windows_safety and http://www.hdb.gov.sg/windows_safety.
Engaging home owners on the importance of window safety reinforces the idea that everyone has a part to play in maintaining a safe home environment. Since 2011, the BCA and HDB have jointly conducted public talks and regular exhibitions at various community events to demonstrate to residents the simple steps to check, clean and maintain their windows.
Together, we can create a safe living environment for all.
