Retired professionals can help students prepare for jobs

I applaud the National Trades Union Congress for partnering 14 institutes of higher learning to get students up to speed on work matters even before they enter the labour force (NTUC helps students prepare to join the workforce; April 27).

In today’s digital and sharing economy, we should change our traditional perspective on jobs and prepare students for “future jobs” in both traditional and new sectors.

Retired professionals from different sectors know what is needed to make one’s job sustainable in their respective sectors or even evolving sectors in their industry.

We should therefore encourage them to conduct workshops and chat sessions in schools and community clubs to help guide students in choosing suitable educational paths for their future careers.

Such workshops and talks would also provide a communication channel for teenagers to learn more and explore the choices available in their future jobs.
