Gan Thiam Poh on Stillbirths and Births (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill
Consider a tax benefit to support parents of stillborn babies - this was suggested by MP Gan Thiam Poh in Parliament on Tuesday (Jan 9). He said lower-income mothers in particular may face the burden of extra costs associated with maternal health complications that contributed to the stillbirth, as well as from seeking mental health treatment. Mr Gan also asked the authorities to look at mandatory insurance coverage for autopsies after stillbirth. He said carrying out an autopsy will answer parents’ questions as to how their child died, potentially prevent similar problems from affecting other babies and identify chronic diseases that might lead to maternal mortality.
