Indranee Rajah on provision of family-friendly lifts in public buildings
Where lifts are provided in a building, at least one must be made accessible to wheelchair users. This means having enough manoeuvring space and accessible features such as conveniently placed buttons and grab bars that would also benefit other users including those using personal mobility aids (PMAs) and prams. Building owners and developers are encouraged to tailor their facilities to the profile of users and go beyond baseline standards where needed. Second Minister for National Development Indranee Rajah said this in Parliament on Wednesday (Oct 16). She was replying to an MP’s question on whether the Government would consider mandating shopping malls and other public buildings to plan for and set aside lifts that are purpose-built to accommodate more users of baby prams, wheelchairs and PMAs to make these places more friendly for families.
