Jamus Lim on Stillbirths and Births (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill

06:20 Min

The Stillbirths and Births (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill will alter the status of stillborn children in the eyes of the law by vesting official recognition of these children in allowing their names to be registered. The Workers' Party supports the Bill as it is the right thing to do, said MP Jamus Lim in Parliament on Tuesday (Jan 9). He sought to verify that the measure will apply to all children born in Singapore, regardless of nationality - noting that this would "presumably" be the case since the birth register is not restricted to only citizens. Assoc Prof Lim also credited Mandy Too and Aidan Hoy, the parents of stillborn twin girls, with starting a petition last year to call for the change. He said the responses to two Parliamentary questions that he filed in 2022 had "given) little indication that there was any intention to change the law".
