Lawrence Wong on securing Singaporeans’ jobs and livelihoods

35:20 Min

Securing jobs, livelihoods and better lives for Singaporeans has always been at the heart of the Government’s policies and actions, said Finance Minister Lawrence Wong in Parliament on Tuesday (Sep 14). Moving a motion on the matter, he said it is important that Singaporeans - and the world - understand this. The Government, he added, is prepared to fight the next election on this issue and ready to fight any party that takes a populist line to stir racism and xenophobia. Mr Wong explained how the Government’s strategies have worked, while acknowledging downsides to an open economy that must be and are being addressed. He said the Progress Singapore Party was choosing to downplay what had been achieved, and play up anxieties instead. He challenged them to come up with concrete policy alternatives and to acknowledge once and for all that FTAs, including CECA, are not the cause of challenges faced by local PMEs.
