Leong Mun Wai on motion calling for clear and achievable goals for sporting success
The Government should continue to review Singapore's sporting ecosystem in the selection of athletes to represent the country at international competitions, said NCMP Leong Mun Wai. Speaking in Parliament on Thursday (Jul 6), he highlighted the case of distance runner Soh Rui Yong, who he said had been left out of the Asian Games for reasons not related to performance. He called for greater objectivity and transparency in the selection criteria for athletes to represent Singapore, and more clarity around the process to disqualify someone. He stressed the need for all sports associations to have people with professional expertise and interest in the sport, saying they are more likely to understand the needs of athletes and work with them to advance Singapore's international standing in sports. Mr Leong also called for greater flexibility around National Service obligations for male athletes. He suggested a dialogue on the criteria for deferment to support athletes in achieving sporting success, while satisfying the principles of national security.
