Lim Biow Chuan on motion calling for impartial Speaker and Parliament as a fair arena for all
One of the duties of the Speaker is to preside over the sitting of Parliament and enforce the rules prescribed in the Standing Orders to ensure the orderly conduct of Parliamentary business. MP Lim Biow Chuan stressed the importance of Standing Orders, saying that without them, Parliament could descend into chaos as there will be no need for accountability, and MPs could be arguing or quarrelling with one another. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday (Aug 2), he also stressed the need for the Speaker to remain impartial and fair to all MPs. Mr Lim said he agrees with this part of the motion of NCMP Leong Mun Wai. But he stressed the Speaker had always been impartial and said he would support the amended motion moved by MP Vikram Nair.
