Louis Chua on Income Tax (Amendment) Bill
It is timely to re-evaluate the Government's current fiscal position against what was initially projected in Budget 2023, said MP Louis Chua. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Oct 3), he asked if the Government could “at the very least” defer the planned increase in GST in 2024. He pointed out that Government revenues are already better than initially projected at the five-month mark. “Is it that difficult to delay the second step of the GST increase?” he asked. He also asked if a delay would result in Singapore storing up more problems for the future and leaving it with less resources to take care of the growing number of seniors. Mr Chua also urged the Government to reconsider the Working Mother’s Child Relief. He said while there could be a group of lower-income working mothers who would benefit “marginally” from the proposed change, the majority of working mothers will be “worse off” with the change in methodology.
