Sun Xueling on options for politically significant persons to seek clarifications
During the passing of the Foreign Interference (Countermeasures) Act (FICA) in 2021, the Government explained that the law has to be drafted to deal with the different ways in which foreign actors who want to do Singapore harm can interfere in its domestic politics. Interactions with politically significant persons (PSPs), who may at first glance appear normal, may in fact be a vector for foreign interference. FICA gives Singapore the levers to prevent, detect and disrupt these threats. It imposes obligations on PSPs. Those who are unsure of how the law applies can seek legal advice. They can also refer to the information kit provided by the Registry of Foreign and Political Disclosures. Minister of State for Home Affairs Sun Xueling said this in reply to an MP’s question in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 6).
