Vikram Nair on Enlistment and Other Matters (Amendment) Bill

03:16 Min

Enlistees may give consent to receiving notices by SMS or email but sometimes life events catch up and the SMS numbers or email addresses may change and are not updated. It is possible that this person would be charged for not attending to a call-up notice. While it is an individual’s responsibility to update the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) on the latest contact details, the penalty should not be at the severity of getting charged for failing to attend the call-up. Moreover, there are increasingly sophisticated spam filters and many email accounts may block call-up notices. Even if the details are up-to-date, notices may accidentally get filtered down. MP Vikram Nair raised this concern in Parliament on Friday (Feb 16) and said the current practice of following up with registered post is helpful because MINDEF will know for sure if the person has actually received the call-up notice.
