It is regrettable that the Workers’ Party’s Lee Li Lian had decided not to take up the Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) seat (“Li Lian’s rejection of NCMP seat not to be taken lightly”, Jan 18).

Ms Lee had garnered about 15,800 valid votes (48.24 per cent) in Punggol East in the General Election last year, and could have still played a pivotal role in serving the residents in her constituency in the NCMP capacity.

In her two-and-a-half years as an MP, she did well in articulating sentiments on the ground and conveying them accurately to the House during Parliament sittings.

An NCMP can add value to Parliament and as such, Ms Lee could have continued to address residents’ concerns and provide feedback to the incumbent MP and to Parliament.

Her voice would have carried weight for the simple reason that she scored the highest percentage of votes among the losing opposition candidates.
